    The Society

The Frédéric Chopin International Society Mallorca (Spain) is a cultural and educational organization dedicated to celebrating and promoting the life, works, and legacy of Frédéric Chopin. Based on the picturesque island of Mallorca, Spain, the Society serves as a meeting point for performers, scholars, educators, and music lovers worldwide, offering concerts, educational programs, lectures, research initiatives, and an international piano competition.Founded to honor Chopin’s historical connection to Mallorca, the Society highlights the significance of his stay on the island, particularly in Valldemossa (1838-1839), where he composed some of his most profound works, including parts of the Preludes, Op. 28. Mallorca, with its rich cultural heritage and inspiring landscapes, became a place of artistic refuge for Chopin, leaving an enduring imprint on his music. By preserving this artistic legacy and celebrating Mallorca as the cultural setting that welcomed him, the Society continues to inspire new generations through performance, scholarship, and cultural exchange.

    A Focus on Heritage

As part of its commitment to historical preservation and performance practice, the Society integrates the study and restoration of period instruments into its artistic and research initiatives. The Society has collaborated with César Hernández Martínez, whose expertise has been instrumental in the restoration of a recently acquired Erard piano, which will serve both pedagogical, research, and concert purposes.Originally purchased on September 13, 1907, by Mr. Limonaire in Bayonne, France, and later owned by Queen Regent Maria Christina of Spain, the piano remains in remarkably well-preserved condition. Currently undergoing restoration, it will soon become an integral part of the Society’s efforts to advance historically informed performance and scholarship, further strengthening its role as a center for research and artistic excellence.

    Cultural Collaborations and Artistic Exchange

The Society collaborates with cultural institutions, festivals, and artistic initiatives to expand its educational and performance activities. As part of this effort, it maintains a partnership with the Torre de Canyamel International Piano Festival, offering participants the opportunity to attend concerts and engage with established artists. This collaboration provides direct professional experience, allowing participants to perform alongside invited musicians and gain insight into the concert environment. Such initiatives reinforce the Society’s commitment to cultural exchange, artistic development.

The Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition Valldemossa was established in 2016 to commemorate Frederic Chopin's stay in Majorca. The initiative was created to continue the tradition of a piano competition in honor of Chopin, which had ceased to be held on the island since the 1990s. In 2016, the first edition focused on pianists under 21. Starting in 2017, it was decided that the event would be held every three years and open to pianists up to 35 years old. Following the end of the pandemic, the competition is scheduled to resume in 2026.
